I can't reproduce this problem; I wouldn't have pushed that test script as it
is if it failed for me.
I wonder if the problem is the `od` command.
What version of _od_ are you using?

You sure that diff is right? Looks to me like you're telling me that, for
you, the lj4 driver writes "Helllo, world" (with three contiguous ells).
