True.  My idea seemed simpler, but it's still perhaps too "clever," and it was
cleverness that got us into this mess.

Maybe.  My argument of "they're already there, so may as well leave 'em" would
carry more weight if they weren't already flawed.  It's hard to claim
something isn't a maintenance burden while you're in the process of fixing
it.

In any case, this certainly isn't something that needs attention before 1.24.

Adding Peter since -mom is implicated.
