I think that's the only bar it need meet.  Said status quo ante could itself
be ambiguous, since a document might redefine a .char character any number of
times over the course of its run.

And it's far less ambiguous than the status quo.

That's fine; their used-definedness was never the issue, it was the mapping of
_all_ of them to the same string that increased ambiguity.
