Follow-up Comment #11, bug #67544 (group groff):

I plead temporary insanity in comment #9--or at least temporarily forgetting
that a hair space between two glyphs will defeat any kerning that would
otherwise happen, which invalidates the primary justification for reversion.
(The commit is still a fix for an _instance_ of the problem rather than a fix
for the actual problem, but as ad hoc fixes go it's harmless.)
