Follow-up Comment #5, bug #67990 (group groff): I think the least disruptive change here is to simply add descriptions of tokens "the user shouldn't see" to `token::description()`. See comment #1.
The ill-formed input document will format poorly (and worse than in the past),
but that's okay because it was ill-formed in the first place.
What GNU _troff_ will not do is deliberately crash due to an assertion
failure.
