Forgot to mention...

_groff_ 1.24.0 has now established the precedent of issuing warnings in
category "syntax" when in compatibility mode and a GNU troff extension is
attempted.

Example:

$ printf 'hello\\R"a 2" world \\na\n' | nroff -Cww | cat -s
troff:<standard input>:1: warning: an escaped 'R' is not portable to AT&T
troff
hello world 2



Non-initial use of `!` in a numeric expression would be just such a case, and
the reliable detection and diagnosis of such usage might do much to offset the
grief this change would otherwise cause.
