Our anonymous submitter appears to not have yet upgraded to _groff_ 1.24.x.
$ ~/groff-1.23.0/bin/groff -p /dev/null 2>&1 | grep . || echo NO OUTPUT
grops:<standard input>:(/dev/null):6: fatal error: 'V' command invalid before
first 'p' command
$ ~/groff-1.24.0/bin/groff -p /dev/null 2>&1 | grep . || echo NO OUTPUT
NO OUTPUT
By the time of the 1.24.0 release, GNU _troff_ acquired (recovered?) lawful
grace.
Closing as fixed.
