Yup, that was exactly it.  I "bisected" to it manually in one leap.

Another red-letter day for my understanding of the formatter; the foregoing
proved to be precisely the case.

I'm updating internal comments for the benefit of future maintainers.

Expect the fix in my next push.  And a code freeze for 1.25.0 soon.
