Follow-up Comment #4, bug #29945 (project grub):
Currently grub has only gzip support. LZMA patches are underway. Importing
LZO shouldn't be of any problem.
Firmware disk sevices are blocking and prevent multithreading. GRUB has
native drivers for ATA and USB. Currently we're polishing and extending those
drivers. Parallel support and decompress is on TODO list:

So what you ask for is possible and is one of goals but it's difficult to
give an ETA
