I would also recommend running "sync" before /sbin/grub. It is common that
stage2 is copied or otherwise changed just before running /sbin/grub
If the cache has not been flushed, wrong file will be modified. It has
already happened to me (if I interprete it correctly).
Ideally, /sbin/grub should never access mounted filesystems.
