If you can suggest a rough outline for a configure test of these bugs,
then I'd be happy to write the test.  I've tried to do this for other
binutils bugs, but I just don't have access to all the older binutils.

Hrm.  I've seen things like this on some machines, but I've been
unable to figure out what causes it.

That's a good suggestion.

You can also try using stage2_debug (--enable-debug), which adds some
instrumentation.  I didn't write it, and haven't really used it
before, so I can't say how useful it would be.
