If you just want to ``chainload'' a proprietary bootloader, run
rootnoverify instead of root. The command rootnoverify just sets the
root partition but doesn't mount the partition. If you want to load an
OS directly (just like in the case of GNU/Linux), you have to use the
command root, because GRUB must mount the partition to read a file
from the partition. I don't think GRUB can boot Minix directly, so
rootnoverify should be enough for you.
If you really need to mount the partition, you could try the patch
that Klaus has already made for minixfs. The patch can be found in the
archive of this list.
