I'm using method 1. The version I'm using sets stage1 to contain the
correct size of stage2.

GRUB from a week or so ago (as it uses stage2_size.h, ChangeLog
1999-09-15) and binutils from Debian 2.1.

I assume it's your change of 1999-09-17 that made configure start
objecting to my binutils. Is it possible that configure is objecting
unnecessarily? I have built a working GRUB with my binutils.
