My apologies for not getting back to you earlier... Can you still reproduce this problem with GRUB 0.5.93 (just released)? I also wanted to ask: are you sure GRUB doesn't detect the partition? It uses the BIOS drive numbers directly, so it should only matter if your BIOS can detect your disk. If you only have two hard disks, then they will appear as hd0 and hd1, (BIOS 0x80 and 0x81) regardless of what controller they are on.
