I think the problem can been seen only in older PCs (such as PS/2),
and I don't think there is a general solution that can probe the
geometry of a floppy correctly in all available PCs. If you think of a
better solution, let me know.

I haven't ever heard the problem. You should report any problem to
this list rather than investigate it by yourself (Perhaps I have more
time than you).
BTW what is the SCSI card?
