Hi,
I install grub 0.5.94 on a friends redhat machine. Here are my
experiences with it: (I am sorry that I do not have the exact error
messages)
grub-install
------------
grub-install does not work - it fails with (something to the effect
of) incorrect number of arguments to test. It works fine on my debian
box.
The help is also not clear:
# grub-install
Usage: grub-install [OPTION] install_device
Install GRUB on your drive.
...
What format do you want install_device in? grub? linux?
grub
----
When running grub from the command line, it says:
# grub
Probe devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.
It should read:
Probing devices...
Should grub identify linux swap?
Possible partitions are:
Partition num: 0, Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x82
Partition num: 1, Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
Partition num: 2, Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
Using setup from the grub shell should not say run "install ...."
but instead say, running "install ..." It took me a while to figure
out that I did not have to retype the commands that it spit out.
Maybe it should also say success?
The system:
Primary Slave 20G HDD
2x550 Celeron
After installing grub on the first partition of my primary slave
(setup (hd0,0); note it is the first bootable disk) and then
booting, grub would say:
stage1 stage1 stage1.... (forever)
Then when I booted from the grub boot disk, tab completion would
no longer work when reading the partitions on that drive.
It spit the following out:
grub> kernel (hd<tab>
hd0 hd1
grub> kernel (hd1,<tab>
error reading geometry ....
grub> kernel (hd1,0)/<tab>
boot etc ....
Note that it could read the partition ok. Also note that tab completion
work correctly before installing grub.
I installed grub on the mbr via setup(hd0) and it would now, correctly,
boot. Note that tab completion still does not work.
Keep up the good work.
