Ahh! Thanx.
AFAIK grub does not include iso9660 filesystem support. It may also have
a problem getting to CD-ROMs that the bios does not support.
I believe the supported filesystems are: ext2fs, fat, ffs, minix, and
reiserfs.
On some systems cdroms are supported by the bios, and would be available
to grub. A CD should be able to be formatted with one of the listed
files systems provided the filesystem is accessed read-only.
If iso9660 was added you could put grub in the "El Torito" section and
the kernel and initrd images could live on the cd filesystem directly.
This would be very cool and would allow the HD or floppy installed grub
to choose these images as well. The problem is that few systems offer a
BIOS interface to the CD AFAIK. So it would not work on many systems.
Caldera puts grub, kernel and initrd in a 2.88 meg "El Torito" floppy
image on the CD. This works on almost all systems. Some still do not
handle 2.88 meg images, which then means the user must use 2 1.44 meg
boot floppies. ;-( These currently do not use grub, but use the older
(uglier ;-) syslinux.
