OK. I didn't know this since the fixed version hasn't got into
Debian archives yet and there's no bug report regarding
this problem in Debian bugs database.
The bug report I submitted was sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and forwarded there to you.
([EMAIL PROTECTED] is listed as the address of the maintainer of grub)
So, if you are listed as Debian maintainer you must understand
that you WILL receive problem reports regarding DEBIAN and
grub's situation in Debian.
Anyway, sorry for the inconvinience - I just didn't have
lust to go and try compiling the most recent source
since I feel we have Debian maintainers for that.
I can't try out every package's upstream source when
I find a bug.

Sorry.
But - still: (now, please don't get offended, I'm just trying to
be constructive and helpful :-)
I was about to including a third part in the bug
report: 'documentation'. I think I'll let it out now. ;-)
Though the info documentation DOES document all the features it
was very hard for me to understand _what are the steps I need
to perform to get grub working_.
I did understand that 'install' would copy stage files to
MBR but I had problems discovering how to really tell
grub what kernel to boot. Well, it finally cleared to me
that it's the "menu" file that I must tell to 'install'
to get what I want. I learned what the commands do but
it got time to figure out WHERE to use those commands
(For example, I tried to type 'kernel' command in the
interactive Linux grub-shell and then run 'install' to
install grub to MBR and make it boot the kernel I
specified. From what I read I first didn't understand that
the commands must be given in the menu file or when
grub has been booted from MBR)
And about the bios order thingy: I can honestly say that
I did read the info documentation (well, not fully but
all the parts I saw was necessary to get it working)
and I really didn't see any note about this. In fact as
I re-read it now I still can't find any note. These things
must be clearly told if you want people to be aware of them.
For the future I propose the following:
Construct a little README file that has the following parts:
1. NOTES
-for example this bios thingy
2. WHAT IS GRUB FOR
3. HOW TO MAKE IT WORK
-briefly tells that you must
a) install grub to mbr (or wherever one wants)
b) give the 'booting commands' either in a menu file
or interactive BOOTED grub (not in Linux shell)
4. WHERE TO FIND THE REAL DOCUMENTATION
-tells that type 'info grub' and see how to use
the 'install' command and others
If I only spoke (or wrote in this case) better English
I'd do that myself but I think it's better left for
someone with better English and grub skills.
But, it's all well now.
I'm a happy grub user and hope to see Debian to use it
in the future. It has great features when compared to LiLo, for
example.
Have a nice summer,
Panu
