I can respond to why I chose to create the hurddocs site first.
Basically, the state of the documentation for the Hurd is pretty bad.
I've written 2 sets of documentation for the hurd in the past and
received absolutely no response from any of the maintainers when I
offered to include it. Because of this, I felt it was worth posting the
information separately. This is what hurd.zugzug.com was originally
supposed to serve and the response was fantastic. People were actively
*asking* for more details and providing corrections. This proved to me
the need for such a site. The maintainers of the Hurd should have no
cause to object, as I'm not competing with their site in any way (Last
time I looked to only helpful information was a link to the Easy Guide).
My current goal is to provide as much information as I can. I intend to
post as much information on Mach and Hurd processes, as well as howto
guides for OsKit, Networking, compiling, as well as experimental
information as I can. So much information is buried in archies and I
want to highlight feature information that has been on the mailing list
from time to time. This is what led me to want to post GRUB information
on the site - it's critical for the Hurd. You'll notice that I'm looking
for existing information on Grub, not hoping for new things to be
written. I'll cheerfully do less work whenever possible! =)
I am not trying to create divisions in the community. However, I think
that one of Linux's biggest strengths has been people willing to go out
and do their own thing (documentation, new projects, etc...) and set up
sites. I really hope that hurddocs.org will be a place where developers
can go, people creating new distributions can go, and new users can also
go to get the information they need to use the Hurd.
