Grub doesn't use its own partition, instead you can put it in any
fat/ext2/minix/ffs or reiserfs partition.  

If you embed grub after the MBR it doesn't create a new partition,
instead it uses some space at the beginning of the hard disk that is
normally unused.  It just puts the stage1_5 file in sector 1 upwards
without any file system at all.
