The mapping is for the BIOS. GRUB is still with first_disk==hd0,
second_disk=hd1 -> the command is for GRUB so use:
rootnoverify (hd1,0)

If you confer lilo and GRUB you will find that this is eventually the
same thing (you give table=/dev/hdb).
