Summary: Grub does not boot on LH3 integrated HP NetRaid
Version: 0.92 and 0.90
Type: software bug

Message:
I am trying to boot a 2.4.19 linux-kernel on a HP Netserver LH3 (PhoenixBIOS: 4.06.43
PL) with integraged HP NetRaid card (bios: B 02.03; firmware: D 03.03).

grub installation ends successfully, typing (in grub-shell)
  root (hd0,0)
  setup (hd0)

Printout is:
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partitiontype 0x83

grub> setup (hd0)
 Checking if /boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
 Checking if /boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
 Checking if /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 16 sectors are embedded. succeeded
 Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2
/boot/grub/grub.conf"... succeeded
Done.

At boot-time, only one line is displayed saying:

  GRUB read error

hd0 is an RAID-5 disc-array consisting of 3 drives, handled by the NetRaid controller.
There are no other drives than this one.

I tried using the controller in I2O mode and in mass-storage mode with megaraid
driver. No change in this behaviour! Devicemap identifies drive in I2O mode:
/dev/i2o/hd/disc0/disc and with megaraid driver: /dev/scsi/host0/bus2/target0/lun0/disc

I tried using grub 0.90 (precompiled by Gentoo-Linux LiveCD 1.2), grub 0.92, and grub
0.92 with pci-direct enabled. Even --force-lba has no effect.

Do you have any idea how to solve this problem? It is a bit weird to start this server
using a DOS partition and loadlin.

Thanks,
  Perolo
