Hi - I am running into exactly the same problem -
1. I am running RedHat 8.0 with a linux-2.4.18-26.8.0 kernel. 2. I am attempting to compile and load a new linux-2.4.18-26.8.0 kernel. 3. I am running on a /boot partition on a Dell Insprion 2650 Notebook 1.8 Ghz and a Dell Insprion 7000 Notebook and I get the SAME behavior on both systems. 4. I compiled a fresh "new" kernel with exactly the same config as the kernel that successfully boots (I used the correct kernel.config file from the configs directory and copied it to /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config, resulting in xconfig having the appropriate default kernel parameters that the kernel I presently boot has, I think) 5. using grub, I get the kernel panic error "VFS = Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" with only the newly compiled kernel 6. my grub.conf file should be correct - its paramters exactly match the parameters for the kernel that successfully boots aside from naming convention for the new kernel. 7. if I change "LABEL=/" to "/dev/hda1" I get a initrd error instead. I have looked for numerous possible solutions both experimentally and online, and the closest I have been able to find to an answer is an obscure reference in the RedHat message board about a bug (possible) in mkinitrd that is resulting in corrupt .img files. However, I have successfully booted one kernel (out of about 10) but there was no change I was a able to track between this one booting and the others not booting. I have not been able to get another kernel to work since this one, so it seems to me there must be a bug somewhere(?)
