Hello,

I'm Nicolas PETITJEAN, BELGIUM.
(Dell Computer: pentium 4, 1.6Ghz, 256 MbRam, 40 Gb HD)

I'm using Grub version 0.93 which was given & installed from RedHat9.0 (3 or 4 months
ago) and it worked very well with my 2 Operating systems ( Linux RH9.0:10Gb &
WindowsXP:30Gb) until last Thursday.

Since that day I'm not able to boot under WindowsXP anymore. I've always got that
error message:
"Booting 'DOS'

 rootnoverify (hd0,1)
 chainloader +1

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS

Press any key to continue ... "

But I'm still able to boot under Linux RH9.0. I've got some error messages due to
attempts of mounting the WindowsXP partition, but Linux work as usual.

The problem is that I would like to have my data written on the WindowsXP partition
back ( if it's possible). I would be even happier if I could once again boot under
WindowsXP.

I'm sorry to bother you with this problem once again; I've seen that this problem has
been answered at least twice, but I don't really understand what I have to do. I would
be happy if the solution is not too complicated ( I'm that clever in computer science).

I've read that this might be a BIOS problem: Changing "auto" to "large" (or something
like that) for HD in the BIOS configuration. But I can only choose "auto" or "off"
(nothing else) in my BIOS configuration (nothing else).
I feel that this problem doesn't come from that, because Grub worked perfectly for
nearly 4 months and I haven't change anything in my BIOS configuration since that.

I don't know where the problem come from and why it suddenly appeared.

Excuse my poor english, I hope you'll understand quite everything

Thanks everyone

nicolas

PS: here is some additionnal information (it may help)

BIOS"
"grub>root (hd0,2)" gives "Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x5"
"grub>root (hd0,3)" gives "Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83"
"grub>root (hd0,4)" gives "Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x82"
"grub>root (hd0,5)" gives "Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83"
