The grub examples for FreeBSD don't work. The setup for FreeBSD should instead be something like: root (hd0,2) chainloader +1

You wrong. It's works for 4.x (UFS file system).
And for 5.x (UFS2 file system) if you install grub from the fresh ports collection.
