Hi

Once you have done the grub-install, edit the grub.conf (menu.lst) and change the
entry to be exactly like your old one
(hd0) /dev/hda1 etc. There should be no
reference to hdb.


Then power off, take out your old 20GB drive, put in the new 80GB drive and you
should be all set. ( Make sure to set the dip switches on the new drive so that it is seen
as the primary master.

Hi,

i've read the FAQ and googled for it, but did not find
any answer.

The problem:

I have a working linux installed on a 20 G hard disk.
I boots up with "grub", everything works fine, except
that disk space is too small.

I just bought an 80 G hard disk and want to copy the
system over to that disk "as it is".

So i booted my system with /dev/hda as the 20 G disk
and have the other disk (80 G) available as /dev/hdb.
I partitioned, formatted /dev/hdb and copied the the
normal files, no problem.

Now i'd like to also make the disk bootable via grub.


Some years ago when i used lilo (an other boot loader) there was the possibility to install it it on a hard disk /dev/hdb so that it would boot up fine when it would be attached as /dev/hda in a PC. If i remember the parameter necessary was bios=0x81 or something like that.


Is it possible for grub to install on a disk /dev/hdb, then switch off the PC, remove disk /dev/hda and replace it with the former disk /dev/hdb that would then boot up as /dev/hda?

I hope it is clear what i want to do, is something like this
possible?
