I get a core dump if I try to install grub on an USB stick (amd64). Sample session:

Installation finished. No error reported. This is the contents of the device map /mnt/boot/grub/device.map. Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect, fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

Please note that the error is not caught by the grub-install script. The boot sector on /dev/sdd is not changed. If I try to manually install grub within gdb, then I get

This is the current CVS version. I get the same problem with grub included with Debian Unstable.
Anybody got an idea?
