I don't know what's going there but...
Have you used last cvs grub, last stage grub (0.97) ?
Maybe you're experiencing an error that it's already fixed.

If you use these HIDE/UNHIDE commands you may use my Super Grub Disk (Cdrom
version) (http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/ ) with its Special Boot ->
Unhide and hide other partitions... options.
