Your problem sounds interesting, but I need more information as I don't have the same hardware myself. You said that the DVD drive didn't work, but can you be a bit more specific? Is it recognized or not? What does Linux/Windows say about it, for example in dmesg? I guess this is related to some usage of BIOS data area. GRUB might overwrite some EBDA, for instance. Have you tried the official version of GRUB? I think Ubuntu's is patched very much, so I wouldn't be surprised even if you don't have the problem with the official.
