Hello! It's not just you. The wording has a bad habit of confusing nearly everyone.
Ideally the versions of Grub Legacy, such as 0.97 are the active versions of that one. And indeed it's being used by a number of distributions. Grub2 is still being developed. Those numbered ones you've seen there reflect those first efforts to create something. (or other.)
