usb_storage is loaded, but even with the USB drive listed in

(hd2) /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Verbatim_STORE_N_GO_078A18B40293-0:0
and the drive has a boot record on it:
dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda
update-grub does not detect anything of interest on hd2.
If you want to have update-grub look for other operating systems then in
your /boot partition you need to install os-prober.
Though I can't help if it still doestn't detect anything there.
$ locate os-prober
/etc/grub.d/30_os-prober
/usr/bin/os-prober
/usr/share/doc/os-prober
/usr/share/doc/os-prober/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/os-prober/copyright
/usr/share/os-prober
/usr/share/os-prober/common.sh
/var/lib/dpkg/info/os-prober.list
/var/lib/dpkg/info/os-prober.md5sums
/var/lib/os-prober
/var/lib/os-prober/labels
I think os-prober gets called alright, it just doesn't seem to look at
the USB drive.
If you can think of anything else for me to check, I am happy to try
what you suggest.
Thanks again for your help,
Arthur.
