Details:

If I try to boot from a grub.efi image created by grub-install then when I
select a menu entry first nothing happens ( the menu flashes ) and if I try
the same menu entry again I get the error "unknown command: initrd". If I make
a grub.efi image with all modules except kernel.mod included then the same
menu entry boots successfully.

This is with grub 1.97 from
https://launchpad.net/~jordanu/+archive/supergrub

I have attached a tar.lzma with my grub directory and in case it is useful
here is the build log for the package I am using:
