Follow-up Comment #2, bug #28815 (project grub):

I appear to be replicating this problem even with the patch below.  OS is
stock Ubuntu Server 9.10 x64 (grub-pc 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu4.1).  Hardware is a
HP Proliant DL140 with no floppy (and no way to add a floppy, or disable it in
BIOS).  

As before, two drives configured as raid1 with dmraid.  Symptoms before and
after installing the patched s/w are the same.  I was able to change the
version number in the grub splash screen (displayed after "insmod normal"), so
I think I'm actually effecting a change in the installed grub ... but I'm open
to it being a newb error in installing the patched version of grub.

This is a non-critical system so I'd be happy to test s/w as appropriate.
