Details:
grub starts, the menu is shown for approximately 1 second, then the pc
reboots
commenting out the theme in grub.cfg allows for normal booting.
System is a Dell Vostro 1700 running gentoo linux 2.6.33
grub is installed via modified ebuild pointing to the experimental branch
instead of trunk
