Because for some obscure reason GRUB2 triggers the bug

It's far from what I asked. I asked to:

grub-mkimage -o core.img

And then in grub-legacy:
kernel /core.img
boot

This will load an empty core.img so you can tell us whether it spins
your DVD up.
