Details:
When booting grub from a machine without serial hardware, enabling serial
terminal makes console terminal print so slowly that it takes 5 minutes to
display the initial menu.
This is reproducible in qemu following these steps:
mkdir -p overlay/boot/grub/
echo "serial; terminal_output --append serial" > overlay/boot/grub/grub.cfg
grub-mkrescue -o serial_timeout.img overlay
qemu serial_timeout.img -serial none
