Details:
Using grub-2.00 on my Gentoo Box it's ignores GFXMODE with specific resolution
or 'auto', use 640x480 and doesn't use framebuffer.
I reported on Gentoo bug tracker:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=435564
and it's appear to be a hardware specific issue.
I'm using:
Acer 5737Z laptop - nVidia Geforce 9400m G
Using grub-1.99 it works.
