Sorry, I forgot the GRUB has separate driver for FTDI.
But I don't know its status (if it is tested and working with real HW - not
only in QEMU).
ad 2.
Correction:

I.e., try to start PC in this way: Connect to PC only "normal" USB keyboard
and some monitor, nothing else.
+ Try boot GRUB and load EHCI driver.
Does it help?
+ If it does not freeze, try to connect serial converter and check if it
works.
