Follow-up Comment #1, bug #66231 (group grub): The GRUB project unfortunately does not consider bugs from downstream projects. Ubuntu adds a bunch of patches not in the official GRUB releases. Please file a bug with Ubuntu.
Having said that, if you would like to help fix it. Build GRUB from git and see if you have the same problem.
