guile-1.3.5pre1 in sgi irix 5.3

On an SGI running irix 5.3, after ./configure and make, the build
stops with

cc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.. -I./.. -I../libltdl -g -c net_db.c  -DPIC -o .libs/net_db.lo
