I like your patch a lot. If nobody objects, I would like to apply it
to CVS. However, can you please post the complete patch again,
including the latest fixes?

i apologize for (still, despite much cvs info page grovelling, some
cvs-info mailing list perusal, and an update to cvs-1.11) not being able
to figure out how to get "cvs diff" to include check-guile.in; you will
have to manually copy that file into top-level guile-core. maybe we can
include some hints in HACKING on how to submit patches that touch more
than one file, especially new files.
btw, i note (w/ some satisfaction) that "./check-guile -i
/usr/local/bin/guile" gives errors. that means the patch works!
btw2, i have not added support for "make post-install-check"; better to
keep the patch focused, IMHO. i can do that later if requested.
