Yes, I can't figure it out, either.  The code (in toto) looks quite
complicated, but I'm not sure whether this is because of cleverness.

I think uniform arrays can be very useful.  If anyone wants to work on
them, that would be great.  Maybe a complete re-implementation is in
order.  The interface might need some work, too.  For example, I find
the "prototype" concept quite bogus.
