It appears that reinstalling gcc with --with-local-prefix=/usr/gnu
does the trick.  However, now installation fails because gawk crashes.
I had gawk 3.0.6; installing 3.1.0 made that problem go away.

So it looks like all is well -- thanks for the help.

Perhaps you might put a note about --with-local-prefix in the Guile
installation notes?
