x86_64-darwin11, Apple-clang from Xcode-4.6.2 (same as original report) with -g 
-O1
        also seg-faults

x86_64-darwin11, clang-release-3.3 with -g -O2
        also seg-faults

powerpc-darwin8, Xcode 2.5, apple-gcc-4.0.1 with -g -O2
        works fine
