We should identity how that GDM assertion failure is reached and patch GDM to simply print an error or bail out. Anything would be better than the endless loop. (Note that the zero-.desktop-files situation cannot happen when installing from our installation image, so I would not consider it a 1.0 blocker; it’s definitely something we should fix, though.)
