So it turns out you were right and the documentation was not.  Quoting
from https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/automake/2026-03/msg00005.html:

    .trs files, so I think that's the one you should use.

Should I send a patch or will it be faster for you do just do it
yourself (given the limited size of the required change)?
