I think that file may likely change over the gs versions and not work
with other ones. So I think one should use the correct one.
Perfectly true. With ghostscript 8.71 this file has an internal change,
so using an old one with ghostscript 8.71 and vice versa failes.
This is definitvly not a valid option.
