Sorry to be unclear.  It doesn't work.  My change was just restoring the
warning in the case that the connection was truly open.  It doesn't
solve the SIGPIPE problem.  (Again, this was in the case where we wait
without doing anything, so the connection "implicitly" times out.)

I just looked at it some more -- cout is not NULL in the `command'
function in this case, but the underlying connection has closed.  I'm
not familiar enough with the code to know how to detect this ...
