Am I correctly interpreting the thread at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg01177.html to mean that we're going to go back to the default ping-forever behavior?
Yes, that is correct. Today I pulled in an updated Debian package with the new behavior, and I really hate it, and I'd *really* hate to have to through many, many machines and "BSD_ME_HARDER"... This is a major API change for my brain, and I suspect similar about anyone else that's been in networking for a long time! I agree that it is a bit of a change for the brain, but I am not keen of changing the default yet again, let alone break what tradition dictates. Unless there are good reasons (e.g. that tradition is actually different), the current behaviour will stay. I think that having a BSD_ME_HARDER variable a good compromise, people can use what they prefer that way. We could even make BSD_ME_HARDER equal nil at some point, and having defaults that we find nicer for GNU systems.
