I have only been building the TELNET server on GNU/OpenSolaris
and OpenIndiana for three days now, so I have no older history
to compare with. The issue only surfaces when using iu-telnetd
and only on OpenSolaris descendants, not when using their native
TELNET server. The other operating systems are not bitten by this.

However, I know the SUNW-native login(1) is much more restrictive
in setting environmental variables than login(1gnu) is. According
the manual page, it only initializes HOME, LOGNAME, PATH, SHELL,
MAIL, and TZ, all others are deferred to each shell to set at the
wims of their own. Let us leave this for our next iteration, unless
some inspiration falls upon either of us within the project.

Regards,
  Mats
